An allergy is not just a set of annoying symptoms; much deeper than that, allergies are indicators of underlying imbalances in the body. A single event, such as exposure to an antigen may set off a person's symptoms, but its whole spectrum of underlying stressors is ultimately the cause. A wide variety of factors contribute to weakening and confusing the immune system to the point that allergies develop. Allergies develop when the body's systems are so overloaded with toxicity, emotional issues, mental stress, and nutritional imbalances that the immune system becomes overwhelmed and confused.
Regrettably there seems to be a vicious cycle with allergen-antibody reactions. Your system is weakened due to illness, or toxicity, and you develop an allergy to something that has never bothered you before further weakening the system and additional allergies develop.
Proper desensitization does not require weekly shots in the allergist's office; it comes from strengthening the body's resistance to stresses so the immune system can respond as it was designed to.

For those of you who would like the specific way our immune system responds to allergens I have included a brief explanation about the body's antigen-antibody response.
There are two responses that the immune system has to discriminate between; 1) the self and 2) the non-self. Thus this finely tuned defense system is ready to destroy micro-organisms, cancer cells, or other invasive materials. However an imbalance in the immune system can attack the body's own tissues (auto-immune) and lead to cumulative oxidative stress with abnormally high free radical production.
There are two branches of the immune system, cellular immunity and humoral immunity.
The cellular immunity is dependent upon the phagocytic cells to engulf invaders (allergen). The most prevalent of these phgocytic cells are mast cells that are a type of T helper cells embedded in tissue to fight local infection. When foreign materials are present the mast cells destroy them and in the process, they release histamine and other agents that cause edema, increased blood vessel permeability and recruit neutrophils (WBC scavengers) to the site of inflammation.
Humoral immunity pertains to proteins of the blood and lymph. This part of the immune system relies on B cells which mature into plasma cells that secrete specific antibodies and proteins to fight infections and trigger localized inflammation. T helper cells regulate the production and maturation of B cells through lymphokines. T suppressor cells gear down the immune response and thus are critical in allergy attacks and auto-immune conditions.
A normal allergic response involves both cellular and humoral mechanisms. Allergic responses vary according to the sensitivity of the patient. Immediate responses represents a rapid over-reaction of the immune system, often within minutes after exposure to the antigen. With mast cells there is the histamine release and other stimuli that cause swelling, hives, itchiness, copius mucus secretions even muscle spasms of the GI tract and bronchioles. Anaphylactic shock results from an immediate allergic reaction affecting the whole body.
In contrast food allergies do not employ the immune system; some types of sensitivities to foods, like lactose intolerance or sulfite sensitivity. Food allergies estimates range from 2% to 25% of the American population. Immediate allergic reactions to food are a small fraction of food allergies.
Typical allergies involve IgG antibodies, and symptoms can develop within hours or days after contact with the allergic food. Faulty digestion and a leaky gut are often a root cause of multiple food allergies, because food allergens that are normally passed through the intestinal tract cross the intestinal barrier and enter the bloodstream. These allergens lodge in various organs and tissues where they can trigger inflammatory conditions. Food allergies are often linked to a range of auto-immune conditions.
The main symptom frequently associated with food allergies is fatigue. Other symptoms include delayed hypersensitivity, irritability, achy joints, blood sugar imbalance, PMS, puffy eyes, dark circles and post-nasal drip. Other food allergies can cause asthma, headaches, insomnia, indigestion, irritable colon, constipation or diarrhea.
