Childhood Obesity

Obesity is classified as body weight which is 20% over what a person's ideal body mass sould be.

Childhood obesity has increased tremendously over the past 15 years, as well as an increase of approximately 30% in type 2 diabetes. What was once considered a disease among adults in their 40 and 50's is now being seen in children and young teens as more of them struggle with obesity.

Early testing in at-risk children is an excellent way to detect any possible problems; Glucose-Insulin Tolerance Test, Comprehensive Cardiovascular Assessment and a Metabolic Dysglycemia Profile are all tests that can be performed for initiating preventive alternative therapies which can profoundly improve their health.

Bottom line is the increasingly sedentary lifestyle with today's children, the consumption of processed foods, sodas, and foods high in saturated fats. The resulting high incidence of obesity is setting the stage for an epidemic of metabolic disease known as obesity.

Some researchers have traced the origins of the problem to the intrauterine environment. Several studies have addressed the impact of excess maternal insulin, leading to greater somatic cell growth and larger body size as well as tendencies toward insulin resistance in the newborn. As these children age, an insulin resistant syndrome (Syndrome X), can begin to develop, especially among children who were not breast-fed. Syndrome X characteristically leads to metabolic changes, and leading eventually to the development of full-blown type 2 diabetes, with its potential for long term complications.

Early assessment of metabolic changes that does not concentrate on weight can help determine effective alternative treatment and be a powerful means to motivate the adolescent to make important lifestyle changes in attitudes and habits; preventing life threatening diseases from developing in the future.
