THE OPTIMUM WELLNESS CENTER

Hypertension

There are two factors that seem to be the determening factors with hypertensive patients. One is Mangesium deficiency and the other is the "G" factor in Vitamin B.

For the past 20 years there have been studies done on the effects of Magnesium supplementation in Hypertensive Patients and these studies have shown that lifestyle changes such as alcohol restriction, weight reduction, sodium restriction, exercise and mineral intake using blood pressure monitoring all have a significant effect on hypertension.

Magnesium is beneficial to hypertensive patients due to the antagonistic relationship it has with calcium by allowing the calcium into blood vessel walls, causing vasodilation.

The problem with hypertensive patients is that they seem to have a problem with magnesium sufficiency; Magnesium deficiency is caused by either poor intake, excess urinary loss, or a combination of both. Dietary magnesium intake has been decreasing in the United States due to our diuretic use and alcohol consumption which stimulate urinary excretion of magnesium.

Changing the amount of alcohol intake is one way to help decrease magnesium loss, and taking a good Magnesium supplement would help to replenish the mineral stores that have already been lost; and if you are taking a diuretic you have to take minerals because they are lost in urine and the only way to be sure of preventing loss is through supplementation.

Now the question is what is the right amount, and what kind is best. The recent guidelines by the Joint National Committee (JNC-6) recommends adequate intake of dietary magnesium for people who are prone to magnesium deficiency to be 400-800 mg daily; we have found that Magnesium Aspartate or Magnesium Gluconate are the best natural/organic forms for 100% absorption.

With patients that are not Magnesium deficient I have recently been using a supplement called Bio-GGG-B which has B-1, B-2 and B-6 components in the phosphorylated form (to bypass the liver processing). The results have been amazing with blood pressure remaining within normal limits and patients feeling a sense of calm as well.

Most of my patients are responding to the recommended B Vitamin protocol in conjunction with Adrenal support for added energy and balance.
