CHOLESTEROLDid you know that no studies have ever been able to prove that cholesterol is what triggers heart attacks. Cholesterol is found in every cell of our bodies and serves as a part of the cells membrane that’s used as part of its protection. Cholesterol is a good indicator of fat in the blood stream but why is it there to begin with instead of in the system serving as a precursor of various steroid hormones, e.g., sex hormones, adrenal corticoids, etc. To better understand the mechanism of cholesterol in the blood stream it would be a good idea to do a quick review of the physiology of digestion and elimination, since it all begins with our food intake and what our system does with it.
The above description is of course not as complete as it could be, but it does give you a good idea of how our food is processed and utilized. If any of the above systems are compromised, by smoking, a diet high in sugar or processed (refined) foods, drug and/or alcohol abuse, wheat and/or dairy allergies, hypochlorhyria, hypothyroidism (subclinical or otherwise), to name just a few, then free radical pathologies begin to occur and toxins are released into the gastrointestinal tract (GI). most of these occurring in the bowel. These toxins in the GI, put a heavier work load on the liver because one of the many jobs that the liver does is to help clean the bowel, and when the bowel is toxic the liver is bogged down trying to help the colon detoxify then it can’t do it’s other jobs thus leaving a large void in the digestive process. e.g., hormone and bile production, glucose/glycogen synthesis, storage of B12 and fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, and it plays a role in the lipid (lipid/cholesterol) metabolism. Cholesterol is a defense against free radical production and is nothing more then an indicator that we are having a response to the presence of free radical pathology. There is a unique feedback mechanism the body has to control the production of the bile that is produced from cholesterol in the liver. When the bile salts are secreted into the small intestine and are re-absorbed into the portal (liver) circulation the amount that is returned to the liver is the signal for the production of bile salts to be produced. However, when there is free radical pathology (flora imbalance) in the bowel some of the cholesterol from the diet is coverted into a substance that the liver cannot distinguish apart from normal bile salts. This causes the liver to think that there are more bile salts being produced than there really is which slows down the conversion of cholesterol into bile salts with all the extra cholesterol remaining in the circulation. Therefore it would be best to look at the digestive mechanism, find the problem and correct it before resorting to the usually unnecessary and costly approach of the drug therapies, not to mention the potentially toxic side effects with this type of therapy. Clinical experience has shown that detoxification is an important part of a comprehensive approach to wellness. From our experience, all chronic disease has a cellular toxicity component. Everyone is exposed to environmental and chemical toxins and if gone untreated it can lead to potentially hazardous disease processes. To get to the root of any problem I recommend that you consult with an alternative health care practitioner and if recommended do a Liver/Colon Detoxification. All of our patients rave about how good they feel after our comprehensive detoxification program and I also recommend that an annual detox be done to maintain each patients since of well being and health.
NOTEIn looking over the literature written over the years in regard to eating to change the fat content of your meals, it has been this doctors experience that most, if not all, of these plans actually contribute to the problem more then help correct it. For example it is surprising to still see many health food articles in books and magazines recommending the use of other oils along with flax seed, canola, and olive oil for salad dressing and cooking. It is such a regretful thing to still see the recommended use of margarine, in any form what so ever, since it is nothing more then hydrogenated oil and is an extremely toxic form of non-food stuff, even the research coming out has confirmed that hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils contribute to heart disease. It's a fact that there was hardly ever a reported case of heart disease in this country until we started using margarine. Ever since the introduction of margarine into the food chain the incidence of heart disease has been on the rise. Although graphs on heart disease show a decline, the incidence of heart disease related illnesses are still on the rise
